It is always a pleasure to read a good book. When I say ‘good’ I mean well-researched, well written, with an engaging narrative and on a topic of interest. Range, by David Epstein fits without question into this category. I can’t remember how I heard about it, but I found it in the local library and have just finished it. The byline summarises it brilliantly – How generalists triumph in a specialized world. As an interdisciplinarian who has been told countless times that I should be more specialised, I found it very reassuring and did a lot of head nodding as I recognised myself, my friends, colleagues, mentors and heros in the stories. Epstein’s closing advice, having expounded the benefits of breadth in interest and in work, and showing clearly that efficiency does not lead to creative breakthroughs, is one sentence: Don’t feel behind.
