I love the power of music to set the tone for the day. I listen to music in the shower (a little habit picked up in a share house in Brunswick in the late 1990s) and this morning’s choice was Peggy Lee’s Walking Happy, recorded in 1967. It starts simply with a walking bass line and a skippy tap shoe beat that has me instantly in a good mood and grooving along. Then a very cool 60s organ slips in with an equally cool drum kit, taking the groove up a notch. The horns are next, with punch and sizzle, but still super cool.
Peggy delivers the sunny lyrics with her signature sound – rock solid with sass and a smile. And it’s just such a happy song about walking that makes me walk the rest of the day with a skip in my step, my head up and smile on my face.
