Take a drive through Western Victoria in late summer and you’ll find that many of the small towns are a mass of bright flowering gums. Corymbia ficifolia is actually a native of south-west Western Australia but her flowering exuberance means she has been planted far and wide. In Dunkeld, at southern tip of the Grampians, the main street is lined with ficifolias, which are in full bloom right now. If you can drag your eye away from the cute little bee bottoms poking out of the flower bunches and instead look downwards, the trees all seem to be bleeding into the gutters and roads. There is so much fine flower debris in bright red and orange that at first glance it appears like a scene from a horror movie. On second glance you realise it is nature being completely splendid.
